Mia started working with Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais in 1957, and was his first and only assistant and collaborator for two decades. Over those years, he created and shaped his work, and together they launched workshops and training programs in many countries, continuing to develop the work and teach thousands of students.
Mia and Moshe added to the depth and scope of this work by exploring traditional healing disciplines in Japan, and were pioneers in the Human Potential Movement in the early 1970’s, collaborating with many leaders from complementary disciplines.
Mia was known for her unequalled mastery of the work and as a superb teacher. After Moshe’s passing in 1984, Mia remained committed to ensure that this work continues in its essential and powerful form, as it was during the many years of their close collaboration and friendship.
Of Mia, Feldenkrais said: “With you, I have reached summits that alone I could not reach. The best lessons I ever gave, were inspired by your encouraging gaze”.
Mia co-founded Mind Body Studies (MBS Academy) with her daughter, Leora Gaster, with the goal of being the standard-bearers for the applications and philosophy of Dr. Feldenkrais’ unique approach to human performance, learning, and healing.
She will always be remembered for the spontaneous sense of fun and joy she brought to every class, inspiring her students with deep love and understanding of all aspects of the work.
Leora has been teaching Mind Body Studies internationally for almost 5 decades. The work is a synthesis of the work of Dr. Feldenkrais, Human Biology with a focus on the interconnection of Brain and Behavior, Anatomy, Biomechanics, Psychology and NLP.
She co-founded MBS Academy with her mother, Mia Segal. The academy continues to qualify hundreds of of practitioners and trainers at all levels, for multiple professional applications, from medicine to education and athletics.
The Academy has a vast library of resources and online classes in several languages, videos and audio recordings, making the work accessible to people of all levels and needs.
Leora published the manuals and the definitive Core Principles of Mind Body Studies, including programs for school children and for children with special needs and their families.
She is currently part of an international team producing an App of this work for people in high-stress corporate settings as well as students in demanding school environments.
Leora is on the Advisory Board of USC’s Peer-Mental Health Initiative. She is also an NLP trainer and was the youngest European girl to receive a black belt in Judo from the Kodokan, Tokyo, in 1971.
